Why "Two Little Ducks"?

Do you know the story about how Apple Computer got its name? Apparrently, they had designed their computer, the parts had been ordered and all they needed was a name to put on the outside of the box. They had been arguing over the name for months, and now, today, they absolutely needed to decide. In frustration Steve Jobs said "If we don't pick a name today, I'm going to name the company after my dinner!"

As we were putting our company together, we faced a similar problem. We knew we needed a name, but we had very little idea what we wanted. Oh, we had loads of ideas about what we didn't want (we wanted to put as much distance between us and the scamsters as we possibly could), but when all you're thinking about is what you don't want, there's not much thought left over for what you do want.

The miserable weather wasn't helping! It had been raining solidly for two months, and we were stuck in the office, keeping our heads down like two little ducks.

Ping! We both looked at each other. It sounded right, when we started drawing the cartoons they looked right. Even though it started just as a joke, like all the best jokes it became true. What other name could we have chosen?

So now you know!

Ralph Waldo Emmerson said: "Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door". Well, you've had your idea: where is everybody?

Can I ask you a question: Why aren't you rich?

We have found that British inventors are a very creative breed. Frankly, we're great at inventing things! But Emmerson didn't say "Think of a better mousetrap". He said "Build" it. Our trouble is, we don't seem to be so good at doing anything with our inventions. The result of this is that:

We continually meet people with great ideas, but who have no idea how to develop or market them.
We continually meet businesspeople who are desperate for new inventions, innovations and ideas to improve their business, yet they can't find inventors, and those they do find are unprofessional and secretive.
We regularly meet financiers and bankers who would love to own a piece of the next big thing, but who wouldn't dream of giving money to inventors.

The problem is, there's no such thing as an inventors' school, there's no reasonable training and no career path. It's not enough to have a great idea: inventors are expected to appear, as if by magic, commercially-aware and fully-developed expert engineers, before their idea is even prototyped!

That's a silly state of affairs, and we've decided to do something about it! We're successful inventors, we run a technology consultancy and we have commercialised many inventions on our own and our customers' accounts. We know how much fun it is to be inventors - and how lucrative! We want to give a helping hand to everyone else who wants to join us in this great business.
